Kanyakumari is a town on the southernmost tip of India’s southernmost state. It is surrounded on three sides by three bodies of water: the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. It is said that Kanyakumari’s sunsets are a unique phenomenon, which draws from the beauty of the three different blues of the waters to produce the effect of a second horizon.

I didn’t experience this phenomenon, but – along with the hundreds of people who had gathered to watch the sun set – I did bask in a warm evening glow that was at once calming and exhilarating.

I was in Kanyakumari for three days. Every morning, I walked down to the beach to read. And every day, I would see these men playing Kabbadi. They played with such competitive spirit. It was a sight to behold.
